Frequently asked questiosn
It's natural to feel uncertain before your first therapy inquiry:
“Is my concern valid enough?”
“Will this person understand me?”
“What if I'm making too big a deal of this?”
You don't need to arrive with a perfect story or a clear diagnosis.
Just showing up with a question — that is already a courageous beginning.
What happens at the first session?
The first session is typically a gentle beginning. Together, we will explore: what is most concerning you right now, what changes or support you hope to gain, your life background and important relationships, and whether we are a good fit to work together. You don't need to have all the answers prepared in advance—I will guide the conversation through questions based on your needs.
My problem doesn't feel serious—can I still seek counselling?
Absolutely. In fact, I encourage starting counselling even when problems don't seem serious. Many clients come not because something is "wrong", but because they haven't felt truly at ease for a long time. Counselling is not only for addressing difficulties—it is also a space to better understand yourself and readjust your life's rhythm.
Is Counselling just talking?
Counselling is indeed a conversation, but it is more than just "talking". I integrate evidence-based therapeutic approaches (such as ACT, mindfulness, self-compassion, etc.) to help you gain deeper insight into your emotions and patterns, and gradually build more stable inner strength and direction in your life.
also offer Sand Tray Intervention — a gentle, creative approach for when words feel inadequate. In a quiet space with a tray of sand and miniature figures, you are invited to create a scene that reflects your inner world. No artistic skill is needed, and there is no "right" way to do it. The process often brings clarity to feelings, memories, or relational patterns that talk alone may not access. Many clients find it especially helpful when they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected from themselves.
Is counselling in-person or online?
I offer in-person sessions in the Nanaimo area (office ready 2026 Fall), as well as online counselling, so you can receive consistent support wherever you are. Clinical research shows that online counselling is equally safe and effective, and it is particularly well-suited for busy professionals.
How long is each session? And how often?
Each session is typically 50 minutes long. This structure helps us stay focused and engaged, and also allows me to take notes and prepare for the next session. I’ll give you a gentle reminder a few minutes before we finish, so we can wrap up our conversation in a thoughtful way.
Frequency depends on your needs: some choose weekly or biweekly sessions, while others may need more intensive support during certain periods. We will find the rhythm that works best for you.
How many sessions will I need to see results?
There is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people gain clarity and relief within a few sessions, while others prefer a deeper, longer-term exploration. Most of my clients begin to feel a reduction in symptoms within 4–6 sessions. The goal of counselling is not to "fix things quickly", but to create change that is real and sustainable.
What is the fee? Can insurance cover it?
The fee is $160 CAD per session. As a Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC), many insurance plans in BC cover counselling services (Clinical Counselling/Psychotherapy). I recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm whether "Registered Clinical Counsellor" is covered. I provide receipts after each session for reimbursement purposes.
What if I'm not sure we're a good fit?
I completely understand. You are welcome to book an initial session to see if we are a good fit to work together. Finding a counsellor with whom you feel safe and understood is important—you don't need to make a final decision right away.
